TheEnd Begins Week 1 Training

Okay so how are we to even begin to understand revelation as a work, as a book, as the Bible and in our lives

first and foremost we will train ourselves tonight to understand in the ways of signs, symbols, numbers, and ideas... it is key that we view the book with a keen eye not overlooking any written word for the detail is in the telling of this work

Revelation is for us to think with a “disciplined imagination” (Psalms are Emotions Romans is intellect) we are seeing in word pictures.. graffiti of grecian times... we must train our minds in the images, symbols, pictures and art of the times in which it was written... there is no greater work to declare contextualization about... ironically people have abstracted the art from the time in which it was created, as if it were created beyond time or imagination... this is a work that shapes imagination and does not delude or distort it...

not a script or playbook but an image gallery, art museum, muse for dreaming/seeing so dont let the details of the portraits ruin the overall museum experience

The Book- The Author- The Audience

Revelation/Visions/Prophecy John/Patmos/Crazy/Old/Worried Churches is Asia/Historical Audience/Present Audience

identifying the message and the medium

Understanding it- making sense of the maddness

“a study of revelation either is caused because someone is crazy or will leave you crazy”- anon

Too Much History (Preterist)

though some of the things that have happened in this work are true... it is never truly accomplished until Jesus’ return

Too Much Future (Fururist)

though some of the things in this work have not happened does not mean we wait until they do, or try to make them happen

a little bit of both for our best understanding

past examples and current reality

The Language

tattered, abused, cut... the koine greek that this vision was written in was purposefully ripped to heighten the disregard for the imperial cult and the oppression and impressions it made

The Signs and Symbols

Dragons

Beasts

Whores

past present and future- "something new something borrowed something Jew"-ish

something of these things are borrowed heavily from an Old Testament Understanding

Over 400 references in Revelation are lifted or manipulated from OT prophecy- sacrificial system, lambs, crowns, kings, annointing, lampstands, seals, trumpets, bowls, all borrowed from the collective imagination from the majority of the audience

The Wonders

earthquakes, hail, fire, disease, and flood, - natural elements cause us to shudder at the reality... see even in the writing there is a mix of natural, supernatural, spiritual, physical, knowable, and ineffable... it is this reminder of reality that causes us real alarm... i know and understand fire, earthquake, and disease... so complicate that with my lack of understanding of supernatural and i am concerned and emotionally heightened!

The Numbers/Numerals/Numerology-

This gives us strong clues to pick up on the symbolism of some other important numbers in Revelation. If 10 represents completion, then 10 X 10 X 10 (1000) is three-dimensional, God-originating completion (Cf. Rev 20). In addition, if 12 is the number of God’s people, then 12 X 12 X 1000 (144,000) means the whole church in its completeness (Cf. Rev 7:1-8, 14:1-5). Some people think these numbers are actual statistics, but I think they are symbolic, based on the kind of literature we are dealing with and the prevalence of symbolic numbers in Revelation.

Of course, this is not just about finding hidden meaning in random numbers. One has to look at these numbers in their context to determine if this meaning is correct. A good passage to start with his Revelation 4:1-11, which talks about the 24 thrones with the 24 elders (representing all God’s people: 12 tribes, 12 apostles), 7 lamps and 7 spirits of God (the number of God’s completeness and eternity), and 4 living creatures (God’s world and creation: think 4 compass points, 4 corners of the earth etc.). Understanding the numeric symbolism helps us appreciate the breathtaking vision articulated by John!

But the numeric symbolism in Revelation gets even more breathtaking, because it is not limited to the numbers that we read about in the book. Dozens of words of this book themselves occur either 3, 4, 7, 10, or 12 times, or a number of times that multiplies these numbers together! For example, there are the number of times divine names occur in the book: Christ (7), Jesus (14), Jesus Christ (3), the one who lives for ever and ever (3), the one who was and is and is to come (3), the Lord God Almighty (7), the one who sits on the throne (7), the Alpha and the Omega (4), the Lamb (28), the Spirit (14).

If this is starting to blow you away, what about these words and phrases: church (7), corners of the earth (4), winds (4), seven spirits (4), seven churches (4) prophecy (7), abyss (7), altar (7), sickle (7), saints (14), bride (3), whore (4), nation (4), cloud (7), lamp (3), door (4), horse (7), pain (3), and on and on!

TheEnd Begins Tonight

Ephmylife-Evil Days Parents Honor External Present Heavenly Chapter 5 and 6

so this post is a week late and probably a tad thin in comparison to what was taught last week... but let me try and hit the highlights

so we conclude Ephesians tonight and it has been a bit challenging for this writer to deliver with intensity and intimacy what raw power is within these pages...

Chapter 5 starts positively enough... "be imitators of God" a clarion call if there ever was one for believers in the church of Ephesus from their apostle Paul.. however... then the chapter fully discloses its weight... Paul ramjams a flurry of regards/listings/indictments at the hearers... and inescapable insurmountable force of odds that

Evil Days- there are dark forces, people, and places out in the world and Paul writes against them, but also against us and those that would remit themselves to the things he hath listed, things that seem to be for everyone... declaring not that darkness live in us but we ourselves have become the darkness... a weight and hurtful (and true) claim!

Parents- after all the weight and pressure pouring out of Paul's wordpurse... comes the solution to proposed problem... submission... which to the divine authority sounds fair and honest and holy enough... but he complements that kind of submission by opting for household submissions... that wives be to husbands, husbands to wives, children to parents, and slaves to masters... a spiteful claim that would spur most away from his words... to salt the injured with submission to authorities "that may be proper, but misplaced" Paul does not fully "understand my situation" how could he could offer something like this... this is.. .unfair...

Honor- i think i read somewhere that the understanding of honor comes after loss... this must be so... because honor seems to be a form of exaltation after suffering or something like that... but Honor is what Paul asks of us... after we have submitted

the final bout of lettering for us comes in a particularly cool twist...

External- all of the recent character crushing/bashing seems to come with a purpose... to BOLDEN us... we must be broken and beat to listen, to charge, to brave... the internal clarification, character cleansing comes for us to understand the external reality we now face... that we are in a fight!

Present Powers- we face a current force of darkness that is sometimes unseen so we need to be on our best guard and readiest posture... we face evil forces there is no doubt about that... and we must be brave.. but we must also be ready!

Heavenly Hope- the things we fight, the realization that our present condition is not all conditions for all times... there is brightness gleaming and pockets of hope to live in and fight through!

Ephmylife-Equip Peace Hospitality

so what now is our duty, what now our measure of life and of living... if we be for Christ and of His name... then how now Paul should we be... Ephesians Chapter 4 offers us some insight on these themes

Therefore- the dreaded indictment of life and living (See Romans 12)-

with
humility
gentleness
patience
love
eager unity
bond of peace

that is a hearty list of "soft action" nary to say this type of bulletin would put us all on the side of servant and less on the tirade of typical leadership.. none of these characteristics are pragmatic, ambitious, or zealous... the corporate character of the church seems to be in need of some "sweetness"

Paul readdresses unity in his "one-sy" statements
One in body, Spirit and Soul
called to to the one hope in a One Lord possessing a One Faith and baptism... one grace given to us all in Christ

EQUIP the Saints for the work of ministry for building up the body of Christ until!
we attain unity and knowledge... to find fullness in Christ

because we want all men to know PEACE and not be carried and tossed in waves of teachers, voices, competitors, things, materials, stuff, influencers

HOSPITALITY- the returning journey for those of us who believed we have found peace is to offer ourselves, the Body Hospitable to those around us... the new, the now, the needy... those are the ones we are now called too to deliver the fullness of Christ incarnate in us...

Ephmylife-Extended Prayer Humbly

Paul's Prayer-

“For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

(Ephesians 3:14-21 ESVS)

Spiritual Strength is a Simple Prayer... oh how we over complicate and fabricate it all! We over plan over work it.... our prayers are tirelessly exhausted and wrought and we are lacking the clarity we need for the day.... let us embrace the dwelling of He in our hearts and become empowered with the Spirit through our inner being.

"Love is the fundamental principle of the new age, of Christian existence in general and not just of Christian character."

Ephmylife the Great Exchange

what do you have to give? what are you holding on to?

so throughout the months of august and september we will be discussing the letter of Ephesians ... it marks an interesting tone for the author Paul who normally speaks specifically and directly to his readers. In the case of Ephesians, he is removed from the physically and somewhat relationally, as he is under house arrest in Rome, and he write primarily to encourage the believers in Ephesus how they ought be, and remind them of who they have were and are becoming....

tonight we address one of those issues in depth as we discuss the meaning behind the great exchange of our lives for His grace and the surrender of ourselves

The Mustard Seed- Summer Recap

so we had this amazing summer and part of the incredibility was the places we visited, organizations we worked with, and people we connected to.... and all three of those important factors coordinated at one of our favorite and now most cherished and we believe a place of true incarnational hospitality and collaborative life change...

for any of our friends that have not had a chance to travel north you must visit and serve at the Mustard Seed in Calgary, Alberta, CA... we call all of those on staff and volunteers friends and true fellow laborers in Christ... an organization built to rescue lives not just for the night but to redeem the rescued ones... the entire city is beginning to waken to the deep level of commitment that this well-formed and forming organization has for its community, not just in the impoverished or destitute subculture but the entire community at large....

thanks to all of our friends that made are visit so insightful, significant, and truly special!

below is an interview with the two main coordinators for youth volunteers- Byron and Lee thanks again guys... we are hoping your friends from OKC can come visit again!

Summer is Over Fall is Coming Soon

so i am not fully sure how to describe or comment fully on the vast richness, depth, and beauty this summer held, captured, captivated... from a variety of ways to a multide of students and adults we were all affected deeply... from times of service from times of joy, from times of realization... it is a powerful wakening to completely pour oneself's out in sheer service and exhaustion to be lifted up in the life of light, joy, and worship.... from many miles traveled and old places revisited with new friends our hearts have been changed, healed and lifted....

i am so excited to see what seeds of summer have been implanted in our hearts for this school year

we are home

for all those that were worried we wouldnt make it... we are home.... and so it comes time to post a few thoughts and trail a few credits and accolades....

(however do not stop reading... there is at least 5! yes 5 more posts coming your way just about mission trip.... and wait until we get into super summer and camp stuff... you might as well just get used to reading here and staying caught up!)

first of all i have to thank our entire team of students and adults... everyone really outperformed all expectations in service, attitude, and self-control... well done team... you have proven great wisdom and maturity and it was a pleasure to travel and serve alongside you

secondly the unsung heroes of our venture... the red and blue vans... for those that may not believe in the power of will or ford automotive believe in the divine intervention that occured in the last few days... vans well past their prime traveled cross country with no more needs than food and shelter... well done machines... well done

thirdly for our new friends and family north of the border (mettie jane, richard, ethan, mettie bell, joanie, glen, lee, byron, joyce, all the billets)... thank you... for everything... you turned a half-held half baked hope into a wonderful memorable learning experience that will shape us for the rest of our lives... and has already shaped some our immediate individual and collective destinies... we love you.. you have taught us the value of community, mission, generative friendship, and hospitality... all of which of Christ Virtures which bind us together and loosen us upon the broken world

fourthly for our family friends and church at home... your prayers, support, encouragement... testify to a commissioning vision for the children of God... we are not to remain dormant or silent or suspended but released into a watching world to emit light and unearth the broken people that lie in the dark soil of this world

finally for the renewed vision of love and repurposed testament offered to us freely and openly from the Spirit that desires to lead us all... we are to be a people about restoring the humanity that was lost, not a humanity of depravity but a humanity of beauty... it is possible... is is happening... are we of the work

dont leave us now friends we need you and you need us we have shared in this story together so now we are both accountable to it... and it does continue

"the future is not unknown, only uncharted...
the fog does not replace what it holds only what it hides for a time...."

last night in calgary

we have come a long way friends and family and i must say as much as i do not want to leave it is probably time for us to return home, we all have full summers ahead and many miles to cover... but summer of 2009 will have always started with a trip north to a home that we didnt know we had, a mission that we discovered inside of us, and a community of faith that transcended borders... we have learned a lot about this country, this city, this community, this church... but even more about the God we serve and the people we are becoming because of His infinite, accessible, redemptive love and grace...

i can not say enough thank you s for all the prayers and support, as a fledgling pastor in a new domain and arena of understanding; support and hope-filled encouragement are a currency that i can eat off of...

please do not stop reading this blog just because the service portion o four trip is over... we will be bringing you all kinds of digital goodies and nuggets of fun... we have videos to upload, interviews to finalize, and audio posts to cast out into the hyperthreaded sea... our spot is still operational so follow us all the way and stop back by tomorrow we will have more then if the sheridan super 8 has wifi... love you all this trip has meant so much and most of us are still processing it all...

day 3 too much to express and not enough time to rest

we are all getting very tired and we are all very thankful that tomorrow is our last hard work day... we have put down some intensive "triple shift days"  this morning we spent our time again at the mustard meeting new friends and building on exisiting relationships... we have been blessed to see many of the same faces for several meals in a row now and will miss them tomorrow when we say good bye... this afternoon at blitz (our afternoon sports/snack/Jesus excursions with the grade school kids) about 50 kids attended the various activities of soccer, karate, art, and disc golf... such a blessing to see so many kids (over 80% have never set foot inside the church before) listen to the story and be told and see the love of Christ... powerful moments, tired crew... couple of us are starting to feel sick... after traveling, jostling, running, sweating, praying, talking... our bodies are about out... please pray for renewed health for some and continued health for others... we miss you all very much...  we did get to see the city from a new angle today...

a bird's eye view atop the calgary tower... one of the highest landmarks above sea level
we have seen the streets but now we see the city and the mass of the million that live, move
work, and grow in this place that we have called home for a few days...

couple pics to close this post out... we are hoping to get some interview time with mustard seed staff, blitz kids, our team, and a host of others (well anyone) to share in what has happened and what we hope continues to happen... love you all very very very very much!

day 2b Work Mustard Seed Blitz Mustard Seed

so after a day like today it is hard to write the things we would want to say.... just know that our view of the workings of the world is constantly being reworked... that a static scripted worldview passed down may not be informed enough to survive... as a team of young students, college aged, and adults we were all touched by the stories of men, women, and children that we met today.... from a former sound tech for van halen who likes to bike at night, to a rambunctious asian-canadian boy with a rat tail, to a set of ladies from the Caribbean, to a young guy who just never took advantage of his privileges until now, to a fiery old gal who biked 100 miles to make it for a meal... we lived the life of a bottle picker this morning, we learned that there is a sub-economy for those living on the street... bottles and cans are the reap from the fields of dumpsters and dealings with small businesses...

zac's take-

i dont want to be preachy, but i think there was a reason that the top ten list for Jesus's friend circle consisted of the publicly broken and marginalized... there is a clarity with hurting that deeply, there is a reclamation of humanity at the end of the rope... it is either a way out or a noose for sure eh... we that live with our private sins of the mind, body, and heart can live from day to day in our own battered darkness seeping and soaking in the privacy of our own kerneled dens... but eventually all of our sin leads us to death whether in the public sphere or the silent corridor it all comes around eventually...

i dont know where you are in life friends but all our hearts, all of humanity cries out from a brokenness, you and i may have different issues that are weighed differently by a broken society and that our diversity fragments reflect on the pavement but we are all in need of a grace that is greater

mission is not a charter, organization, job, calling, or career but the unique/communal character of God
that to partake in the divine is to assimilate, replicate, duplicate, disciple into, follow hard, model, reflect...

and i am beginning to think that Grace Rescue Mission is a divine redundancy

canadian hello june 3

Day 2a Work Plan- Mustard Seed Blitz Mustard Seed

sandwiching our time today between working at the mustard seed in morning and evening and blitzing this afternoon we should be happy, busy people keep us in your thoughts and prayers!

it's okay to be jealous.... this city is beautiful, growing, and broken... we are hoping to see all three

Tuesday, June 2, 2009

Day 1b Storehouse Blitz Seed

so i think we are all a little bit overwhelmed after today....

"healing comes with a steadfast devotion to love and love always comes with expectations"

so this morning we started off by helping the Storehouse a multi-dimensional multi-ministry facility, that is coordinated by one of the members of Cambrian Heights Baptist Church... Mr. Glen Upseth had some remarkable insight about how it all can really happen and that sometimes finding supplies doesnt even involve spending money but using your brain... thanks Glen... oh and we shucked over 100 boxes of corn... you will just have to see the pics and video when we get them to believe it

this afternoon we returned to cambrian to prepare for our first after school day with the kids from the elementary... we will post that about 30-40 came but excitingly enough about half of them were first timers to the church and all promised excitedly to come back and bring friends... you would have been proud of your kids today church family they loved on these kids like no other.... taking initiative pouring investment and smiling and listening a lot... stories abound in deep sweet love

this evening we had our conceptions and worldview tilted... now to be fair we have done and have been apart of various downtown "urban" homeless mission projects, sites, and centers but never have we met any organization or location that had it all and had it all together like the mustard seed of calgary... i can not even begin to list to you the enrichment that is laid out not just for the hungry and unclothed but for the entire community... they are rebuilding the idea that a community center can be a grassroots for connectivity and growth... they are a Christ-centered organization that is literally doing it all for the lives of those they reach out too... and the number of people they help each year is easily in the thousands... multi-site, multi-focus, multi-dimensional. multi-ethnic... our hearts were touched when they toured us through facility and mentioned not only wide scale impact but personal stories of transformation... some staff and many volunteers oil a machine that is destined for kingdom greatness...

tears fill our eyes not only when we see the broken, but when we see the broken restored

Day 1a Work Community Kitchen Blitz Mustard Seed

hey friends just an early morning post (well roll your clocks back an hour for full effect... we are in mountain time baby!)

we are starting this morning by helping out with the community kitchen... they are transitioning from spring to summer activities and need some manpower for the shift, and we are more than happy to help!

after lunch we will be launching our after school sports/education program... we are calling it blitz and our family and friends at CHBC have been more than gracious hosts to our endeavor

and then tonight we will conclude our time by starting our community missionary training with the mustard seed a life and faith rehabilitive center for the impoverished and underprivileged... this organization is legit and a well oiled machine and we are excited to see their underworkings and help out in any way we can

missing home but not too much yet!

Travel Day 3 Falls, Mountains, Customs, Canadians

wow so another late night posting by "mac light"  well it seems like several of you have found our spot!  not near as many miles today but we HAVE ARRIVED SAFELY! for all the parents grandparents and worried pastor and church family we are here and safe and sound in Calgary, Alberta, CA! oh and for our church family and staff... the vans have never run better (i think they just needed some mountain air) so we are in and ready to get to work tomorrow so less touristy pics and more of our missionaries at work... we love you all, stay up with us lots of goodies to come!

our first taste of the mountains and beauty that became our staple scenery, we are still in awe of the majesty....

mountains are so beautiful but so were the falls of the infamous great falls, MT if you are a lewis and clark fan then you know all about the ardor to explore the tricky falls

we are smiling because this was pre-customs adventure... in case you hadn't heard the customs regulations have become even more astringent for those traveling by car than ever before and on the inaugural customs restriction day they delayed our transit for 2 hours because of system errors and restarts, but  we were not hassled just held back but are still so excited to be in a brand new place

oh and one other fun pit stop came from vulcan, alberta... a small quaint town dedicated to star trek and trek culture... this replica hovers outside their museum which triples as their tourist/travel center and chamber of commerce what a wonderful place full of memorabilia, dedicated fans, and host to spock days (a annual conference that trekkies attend from around the country and US)... but one of the most interesting stories is linked here!  what a cool place to pit stop at...

Day 2 Travel 730 Miles is still a pretty long way

so today we kicked it off early, not quite as early as yesterday but still early enough... leaving ft collins colorado at 7:00am and heading up through almost the entirety of wyoming and into montana for a little run in with everyone's favorite defeated general (and apparently shelbie's favorite general pastry) Gen. George Armstrong Custer (custard for shelbs)

wyoming looked like something out of the wild west... the real showdown landscape between the foraging pioneers, manifest destiny's children and the hearty and home protecting natives from a multitude of tribes and cultures... the backdrop for their episodes was nothing short of wild trees, flowers, scrub mountains, cascading hills, plateaus

the battle of little big horn is quite a place to visit, scenic, historic, well-documented and well organized... found out from our resident historians herby and austin that this battlefield is the only one in on american soil that marks the spots of dead, not only american soldiers but the native tribes as well (thanks herby and austin)

after big horn we just booked it into montana we began to feel a little bit of the travel burn and were flat out ready to crash into sleep, so we arrived in great falls, MT with high hopes of getting much needed rest...

Montana is beautiful (well eventually the first half... southern? not so much) the rollicking hills and dipping valleys pick up towards the north- Canadian half!!!! love it love it love it we are all so impressed and rocked by the amount of scenery change/geographic shock that we are in

another big travel day down but more interesting pics and stories to come tomorrow... keep following us friends, and leave us comments we would love to hear what you are doing as well!!

this quote hung with us as we left the battle of little bighorn thought we would leave it with you as well

Follow Us on the SPOT!

in case you have missed out on the wonders that are GPS (global positioning system) then you must read up and follow us with our SPOT tracking device.  The little orange "bug" clips on our dash and relays the position "redwings" and "blueflight"  to the site where you can follow us.   The link to follow our journey  is listed below or right here!  we would love for you to follow us via satellite as we traverse 10 states and a new country in just a 2 weeks.
we will be traveling a bit more tomorrow and then just here and there for the next few days before we make our triumphant return home

Good Morning FBC Bethany!

we miss you guys so much! we are off and driving!  great falls montana here we come!
