Freaks and Geeks Introduction

have you ever wondered what makes Christianity... Christian? is that even a fair question to ask? cause i often wonder what are the things that makes Christians “christians” because it seems so many of them are so different... like... some are really nice, some go out and party, some are really republican, some recycle others don’t, some go to church all the time others only go to church like on easter and that’s it... so what makes a christian a Christian... well i don’t exactly know all details but i do know their are some things are that are pretty well... freaky and some that are uh... sorta geeky...
so for the next 7 weeks let’s talk about it...

some lyrics from joan jett to get us started on this one...

I don't give a damn
'Bout my reputation
I've never been afraid of any deviation
An' I don't really care
If ya think I'm strange
That’s what i am going to do...

isn’t Christianity weird?  like Christians are weird people... strange people sometimes... like i have met some that are so nice, loving, and forgiving it is hard to believe that they are people... and then i have met some that go to church so much that i don’t if i could ever do what they do... Church 3-4 times a week! forget that....

so what is it then what makes a Christian a Christian... maybe it is just strangeness that does it...

here are some words from Paul

“The Message that points to Christ on the Cross seems like sheer silliness to those hellbent on destruction, but for those on the way of salvation it makes perfect sense. This is the way God works, and most powerfully as it turns out. It’s written,
I’ll turn conventional wisdom on its head, I’ll expose so-called experts as crackpots.”
(1 Corinthians 1:18–19 MESSAGE)

that the entire message of Christ (the gospel, story, Jesus’ life) points to a sense of silliness or strangeness to those that don’t understand it... but for those on the Way (and we will talk in great detail over the next few weeks about “the Way”) it makes sense... and the Paul adds this for irony... “this is the way that God works” GOD WORKS IN IRONY! who knew that God’s humor was in the sardonic and not in the slapstick... hmmmmm interesting stuff to mull and think about....

welll i leave you with this teaser and a whole bunch of other questions.... see you tomorrow night!!!!

Going in the Right Direction

What am I supposed to do now? Where am I supposed to go? What does God want from me?
If those sound like familiar questions then you are not alone... in fact there is a large family of people struggling with those questions on a daily basis... don’t you wish it was this easy sometimes...

“As for Philip, an angel of the Lord said to him, “Go south down the desert road that runs from Jerusalem to Gaza.” So he started out, and he met the treasurer of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under the Kandake, the queen of Ethiopia. The eunuch had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and he was now returning. Seated in his carriage, he was reading aloud from the book of the prophet Isaiah.
The Holy Spirit said to Philip, “Go over and walk along beside the carriage.”
Philip ran over and heard the man reading from the prophet Isaiah. Philip asked, “Do you understand what you are reading?”
The man replied, “How can I, unless someone instructs me?” And he urged Philip to come up into the carriage and sit with him.
The passage of Scripture he had been reading was this: “He was led like a sheep to the slaughter. And as a lamb is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. He was humiliated and received no justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.”
The eunuch asked Philip, “Tell me, was the prophet talking about himself or someone else?” So beginning with this same Scripture, Philip told him the Good News about Jesus.
As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, “Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?” He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. The eunuch never saw him again but went on his way rejoicing. Meanwhile, Philip found himself farther north at the town of Azotus. He preached the Good News there and in every town along the way until he came to Caesarea.”
(Acts 8:26–40 NLT-SE)

This story is pretty digestible, and very helpful for those of us trying to do what God would ask of us.  Not only do we have a disciple following in Jesus’ footsteps, God actually moves Phillip’s feet to where they need to be (final line)... Man if only we were Phillip and God actually just told us what to do and put us in these awesome situations.... It seemed like Phillip couldn’t mess this one up... if there was ever a slow-pitch faith sharing episode to swing at, this was that moment....

BUT THEN WE GET STORIES LIKE THIS

“Meanwhile, Saul was uttering threats with every breath and was eager to kill the Lord’s followers. So he went to the high priest. He requested letters addressed to the synagogues in Damascus, asking for their cooperation in the arrest of any followers of the Way he found there. He wanted to bring them—both men and women—back to Jerusalem in chains.
As he was approaching Damascus on this mission, a light from heaven suddenly shone down around him. He fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to him, “Saul! Saul! Why are you persecuting me?”
“Who are you, lord?” Saul asked. And the voice replied, “I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting! Now get up and go into the city, and you will be told what you must do.”
The men with Saul stood speechless, for they heard the sound of someone’s voice but saw no one! Saul picked himself up off the ground, but when he opened his eyes he was blind. So his companions led him by the hand to Damascus. He remained there blind for three days and did not eat or drink.
Now there was a believer in Damascus named Ananias. The Lord spoke to him in a vision, calling, “Ananias!” “Yes, Lord!” he replied.
The Lord said, “Go over to Straight Street, to the house of Judas. When you get there, ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul. He is praying to me right now.I have shown him a vision of a man named Ananias coming in and laying hands on him so he can see again.”
“But Lord,” exclaimed Ananias, “I’ve heard many people talk about the terrible things this man has done to the believers in Jerusalem! And he is authorized by the leading priests to arrest everyone who calls upon your name.”
But the Lord said, “Go, for Saul is my chosen instrument to take my message to the Gentiles and to kings, as well as to the people of Israel. And I will show him how much he must suffer for my name’s sake.”
So Ananias went and found Saul. He laid his hands on him and said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road, has sent me so that you might regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” Instantly something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he regained his sight. Then he got up and was baptized. Afterward he ate some food and regained his strength. Saul stayed with the believers in Damascus for a few days. And immediately he began preaching about Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is indeed the Son of God!”
All who heard him were amazed. “Isn’t this the same man who caused such devastation among Jesus’ followers in Jerusalem?” they asked. “And didn’t he come here to arrest them and take them in chains to the leading priests?”
Saul’s preaching became more and more powerful, and the Jews in Damascus couldn’t refute his proofs that Jesus was indeed the Messiah.”
(Acts 9:1–22 NLT-SE)

Right after Philip’s story we encounter a character that was mentioned earlier in the Book Acts... a man named Saul a loathsome villain against those who believe is converted... by Jesus?...

but then we consider the word Convert/Repent- and it is direction change a unit alteration... conversion doesn’t necessarily destroy what the thing was but it changes how it is understood and what it is used for... for example- fractions don’t work well for counting back somebody change and kelvin units of temperature only make sense to chemistry nerds that think that absolute zero is any number other than zero (that one was for all the AP Chemistry students that got hot like mercury)...

Saul/Paul was still the same impassioned guy who would stop at nothing to see his goals achieved... he was just WAY off track in his goals... he was literally headed in the wrong direction

so here we have the worst enemy of Christ become one His greatest followers, disciples, leaders...
so maybe it is not you maybe it is just the place you are headed...

or here is some bluesy wisdom to consider...

I was lost
I thought the losing dice were tossed
Didn’t know where to go
Didn’t have no one to turn to
I’m glad I found you just in time
I won’t miss those things I left behind
Now I’m going in the right direction
Going in the right direction
Now I’ve found
The road I need to travel down
I don’t know what tomorrow brings
Day by day with you I’ll do the same thing
I’m so glad I’m standing on my own two feet
No more running down that dead end street
You better get right
Or you’re gonna get left

Brightside Tomorrow March 10 "What is the What"

so there is a seemingly benign and vague question i want to ask all of you (and the question is borrowed, but i want your answer to be different)

What is your What-
what is the thing in your life that you think you have all figured out, fixed, and are not worried about?  Is it a relationship? Is it a skill? A promise? Is it some sort of security that you have created for yourself that you think no one else can harm or touch?

or here to put it more "spiritually" is there an area/part/majority of your life that you think you don't need God to control, guide, or rule? Is there something in your life that you "got it" all figured out?

still thinking? or do you "got it"... good write it down, text it to me or if you are brave post it here or on the facebook page...

and for tomorrow night read these two stories (we will be discussing them.. basically john 3 and john 4 with some clipping)

STORY OF NICODEMUS
“There was a man named Nicodemus, a Jewish religious leader who was a Pharisee. After dark one evening, he came to speak with Jesus. “Rabbi,” he said, “we all know that God has sent you to teach us. Your miraculous signs are evidence that God is with you.”
Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.”
“What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?”
Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”
“How are these things possible?” Nicodemus asked.
Jesus replied, “You are a respected Jewish teacher, and yet you don’t understand these things?I assure you, we tell you what we know and have seen, and yet you won’t believe our testimony. But if you don’t believe me when I tell you about earthly things, how can you possibly believe if I tell you about heavenly things? No one has ever gone to heaven and returned. But the Son of Man has come down from heaven. And as Moses lifted up the bronze snake on a pole in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,so that everyone who believes in him will have eternal life.
“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
“There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God’s one and only Son.And the judgment is based on this fact: God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants.”
Then Jesus and his disciples left Jerusalem and went into the Judean countryside. Jesus spent some time with them there, baptizing people.”
(John 3:1–22 NLT-SE)

<<<Nicodemus is the religious guy, one of those guys that other people turn to for help... and he still went to find Jesus because even the things that he was supposed to have figured out, he had questions, doubts, concerns... does this sound like you? are you someone that is normally pretty secure and people even turn to you for help or advice? but do you ever wonder? ever worry? ever still have doubts?... >>>

STORY OF THE WOMAN AT THE WELL
“Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John(though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did). So he left Judea and returned to Galilee.
He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.”He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.
The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?”
Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.”
“But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?”
Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
“Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.”
“Go and get your husband,” Jesus told her.
“I don’t have a husband,” the woman replied. Jesus said, “You’re right! You don’t have a husband—for you have had five husbands, and you aren’t even married to the man you’re living with now. You certainly spoke the truth!”
“Sir,” the woman said, “you must be a prophet. So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship, while we Samaritans claim it is here at Mount Gerizim, where our ancestors worshiped?”
Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way.For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.”
The woman said, “I know the Messiah is coming—the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”
Then Jesus told her, “I AM the Messiah!”
Just then his disciples came back. They were shocked to find him talking to a woman, but none of them had the nerve to ask, “What do you want with her?” or “Why are you talking to her?” The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village, telling everyone, “Come and see a man who told me everything I ever did! Could he possibly be the Messiah?” So the people came streaming from the village to see him.”
(John 4:1–30 NLT-SE)

<<<this unnamed woman is a powerful example of being in the wrong place at the right time... how was she to know that on this day of days she would sit next to Jesus and He would ask her for water and later find out He had something better in store for her... something that she didnt even know was possible but yet knew she needed... this is another situation that applies to a lot of us... we don't even realize that we need and yet He makes a way, shows, guides... says the right thing in a right way to just mess up everything in the most perfect way possible>>

I hope to see you tomorrow night and i hope that these words find you well and that He continually draws you back to Him!!!

peace and blessings
