PreVintage Week 2 Lost Coins Old Ladies and A Possesive God

Vintage is THIS WEEKEND!!!! are you signed up? www.vintageweekend.com if you are not! love to have you all there it's going to be great!

Vintage 2011: Prodigal
for the whole month of February we wanted to study the stories of reconciliation, consider the idea of true ministry, the true calling of restoring and mending broken things... we all live with hurt and see the brokenness of our world... what does God have to say about it, what are we to do about it?

Landing in Luke 15
Luke 15 is the theme chapter for all the parts of our next weeks together guiding us to a great finale in Vintage Weekend (Feb 25-27 signup online @ www.vintageweekend.com)
we spoke a little about this last week but let's just refresh and reiterate for repetitions sake

“Now the tax collectors and sinners were all drawing near to hear him. And the Pharisees and the scribes grumbled, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.””
(Luke 15:1–2 ESV)

I love that in this first section the religious leaders that were around Jesus were dismayed by his company. They preachers and church leaders didn't really much care for Jesus' friends thinking they (and probably He) were of bad reputation and dirty living... so upon hearing their grumbling and frustration Jesus tells stories about the nature of what God is really like and the way things oughta be...

Studying the Character of God
God gets possessive- so tells the second story in Luke 15...

““Or what woman, having ten silver coins, if she loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and seek diligently until she finds it?And when she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin that I had lost.’Just so, I tell you, there is joy before the angels of God over one sinner who repents.””
(Luke 15:8–10 ESV)

Sweet little old lady with not much loses a bit of what she has and instead of counting her losses goes about finding a solution, the missing piece, the necessary thing

Ownership- The coins were hers in the beginning and when she discovered the lost one, her fullness was restored.  That is the kind of loving ownership God exudes.  It is the father to child, shepherd to sheep, woman to livelihood loving ownership.

**Egg frying theology  (or that will cook my noodle)- it is worth noting and discussing that Jesus uses a female lead in a parable. A curveball pitch to be sure. This has to at least say something  about the character of God (maternal, loving, embracing) but perhaps it might even describe the nature as well (try that theological nugget).

Possessive God-
The nature of God is that He wants what was/is lost to be found... it is not enough to have "enough" or get by.  God desires all and if someone belongs to God.  God goes after them... The coin was owned, disappered, but not forgotten...Theology 101 states IF- God is, THEN  we are to be as well... Do we try and reclaim the lost ones? the missing? the pieces?

Taking on the personal loss.. The woman is hurting for what was hers now lost... she wants/needs it back!

Celebration-
again with all the "rejoicing in the streets" stuff telling people the good news and bearing glad tidings about the finding of one lost silver coin

Prodigal Week 3- Elder Entitlement

The third character in the parable is the elder son the loyalist that stayed at the house tending to his business but not of his father's heart

You see when his younger brother came
home the older was not pleased... Though he was still going to get his portion he didn't approve of his father's love

He was jealous! He coveted love even though he was in his father's presence the whole time previous... The older son is possessive... The is being his attitude his perspective...

The heavens are not far away but here surrounding us

PreVintage Week 1 Character of God a Sheep for the Shepherd

Back Together Again
We are back we are finally back!

Tomorrow marks a beginning that should have taken place over 2 weeks ago, but oh well who cares we are finally back...

God comes looking- the opening story is so classically Jesus; sheep, shepherds, and a good natured person set ought to bring the lost one home...

“So he told them this parable: “What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open country, and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it?And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep that was lost.’Just so, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.”
(Luke 15:3–7 ESV)

A sheep of a shepherd goes missing so what does the shepherd do? take the loss? consolidate the remainder? NO he goes after the one and hauls it back to the fold!

Jesus was sent- like a shepherd after His sheep so too must the gospel be delivered- the good news must be carried to a recipient. I don't think we linger on this enough that Jesus didn't just happen upon a broken place but was sent to it to redeem and reconcile it. This is the part of "purpose" that we need to understand. Having purpose is not just figuring out what job you want to do in your 30s but living out the purpose of "bringing back" lost lambs to God

The nature of God is that He wants what was/is lost to be found... it is not enough to have "enough" He desires all and if someone belongs to God He goes after them...

Celebrates the Return-
There is joy that the sheep was returned the shepherd, God, is thankful to have it back. Are we so happy, thankful for those that have run away, disowned, disobeyed to return?
or would we rather (quietly and secretly) them suffer and be punished for their running away?

Don't miss the beginning
"What man of you" The whole story was meant to be put back on us (oh loving, forgiven, redeemed Christians). Kind of a "If you liked this story so much then why don't you...." kind of thing.  We are also sent to go and do likewise... action statements/stories/parables are earthly/heavenly in content but also in force. The point of the story is not for us to feel good that God is like that but participate in the actions and ways of God. That is the heart of true ministry and discipleship.

Look forward to seeing you tomorrow night to discuss this more!

Prodigal Week 2 - the Father's Embrace

A second look at the parable reveals the mercy love of the father the man that was declared dead by his younger son is the one renewing his life

Holiness burns away all self-righteousness

Don't shroud yourself in self-justification
Have you faced the thing that troubles your soul?

Carrying one another...

One of the reasons people don't come to church is because church is worn out but the cross isn't ...

What stipulations are you putting on love?

When you hear the story of the Father's love do you connect with the returning son? Or the open-armed father?

Oh church we are to be forgiven and open armed Fathers' looking for lost sons coming home meeting them outside the gates beyond the fenceposts

Prodigal Son Week 1- the son that ran

February is the month log journey to study the ministry of reconciliation (our calling as new creations) Sunday morning sermons are character evaluations of the parable of the prodigal son and for week 1 we will be in talks over the younger son "the one that ran"
RELEASED
The demands of a young are to have what i's promised before the appropriate time...

REBELLION
"The thing that interferes with rebellion is results"

The punishment for running away is always, eventually rock bottom...

Proverbs would write about this as haughtiness or haste... Acting too quickly

Just because you control the situation for a while doesn't mean you ave avoided the consequences

REPENTANCE
Coming to understand ...

Turning facing owning up too... The rehearsal before the statement...

RETURNING
Heading home after rebellion and running

Celebrated for the return not for the rebellion...
