Freaks and Geeks Class 3- Spelling- WISDOM is kind of a GEEKY Thing
learning from those that have gone before us just sounds geeky but is oh so important...
so there is a whole section here where I could rattle/prattle on about how important it is to learn and not forget your history... from your family, to your town, and especially your faith all have a rich deep history that was brought before you got here... you aren’t the first ever in your family/town/faith to learn something or try something and the collected knowledge that you should be drawing from is appropriately labeled WISDOM
WISDOM
wisdom is really the biblical by-product of community
that when we collect all that we know and has been revealed to us we find that we have less to create and less to be lonely about....
as much as we want to be the creatives and originators... history/wisdom would deter us from that a couple notches... in a good way
LANGUAGE LEARNING
no where better is this represented than with our language... students/youth/young people are the best/worst at trying to redefine language- from to textspeak L337 (leet as in elite as in nerds are cool... right gamer friends?)
we are always trying to forage a new word or phrase and forgetting that very vocab that we have to rebel against is actually inherited from a long lineage of those that were trying to refine and rebel or as a mutual friend of ours states (to me mostly)
mike lawrence quote- “changing the word just changes the word if you were really interested in changing something change how the word is used”
and though this quote was taken from a conversation we had about labeling things i think it works for a wider audience of how we view church, faith, Jesus and all those concepts, ideas, and beliefs...
TOMORROW’S LESSON
Tomorrow yes we will have a spelling bee but even more spelling/vocab lessons are powerful reminders that we did not invent language... we are privileged to be apart of it... learn it, absorb it, and THEN begin to redefine it..
“Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love”
(1 Corinthians 13:8–13 ESV)
Read the whole chapter of 1 Corinthians 13 and see what you can pick up about how love and speaking go more hand in hand that you used to probably think...
the full challenge of language (way we talk about things) is enduring the process to learn it, some days that process may move very quickly, other days it may seem dreadfully boring, long, and dull... either way it is up to us to learn from the best sources we have... and to be blunt... that ain’t you.... come tomorrow... learn a thing or two, about learning a thing or two
no matter enjoy this video as a prelude for tomorrow
