FREAKS AND GEEKS WEEK 4- FREAKY THING WE DO- THE IMPORTANCE OF DINING: THINK ABOUT WHAT WE EAT
Food something we surely have taken for granted in the last few decades, with the invention and explosion of fast food and drive thru eating we have lost some of the sacredness of eating, and though this lesson is not aimed to make us healthier eaters, I do think there is spiritual significance in the way we view food.
What we eat-
Food is Intimate- what we put into our bodies, what we soak up, what we take in...
Even in the Beginning God the Creator was ordaining the necessity, order, and place of food in our lives.. Food is the fuel for our physical bodies and we should not take lightly how, what, or when we eat... i know it sounds so trivial but it is also very real and very potent for us to understand the value of food in lives and the spiritual significance that is not absent....
“And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. And out of the ground the LORD God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
(Genesis 1:29–30; 2:9 ESV)
When we eat-
Who likes to eat alone? not a lot of you right... food was meant to be shared, and the time we spend eating is very shared, friendly, and the part of our day we normally look forward too... (this is why I believe most youth pastor’s favorite missional story is to have you eat with the lonely kid at the lunch room... because there is spiritual quality to eating with someone... how is that for food for thought?)
““Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom his master has set over his household, to give them their food at the proper time? For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink,”
(Matthew 24:45; 25:35, 42 ESV)
Who we eat- (weird I know)
Jesus as daily bread and living water- Jesus remarks of himself as the one who gives living water.. which is to say, He is our spiritual sustenance. He gives us refueling when we feel dry or down....
“Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is that is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,’ you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.”The woman said to him, “Sir, you have nothing to draw water with, and the well is deep. Where do you get that living water? Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’””
(John 4:10–11; 7:38 ESV)
Jesus as communion elements- fruit of the vine and bread- the last thing Jesus did with His disciples was share a meal and commemorate their time together... so that everytime they broke bread they would remember Him...
“And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.””
(Luke 22:19 ESV)
“For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink.”
(John 6:55 ESV)
“Jesus said to them, “My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to accomplish his work.”
(John 4:34 ESV)
What we do when we eat-
Remember- the act of eating should be a thankful one, and thankfulness involves remembering. this is why we pray before we eat... to give thanks, but also to remember the One that provides for us... the One that died for us... the One that guides for us...
“and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.””
(1 Corinthians 11:24–25 ESV)
Share- we share stories, we share our food, we share our time...
“And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts,”
(Acts 2:46 ESV)
